Training and Supervision of Taught Students

Training and Supervision of Research Students

I have supervised a number of doctoral students over the years and can claim to be experienced in this area. I jointly supervised (with Profs Peter Buckley and Jeremy Clegg) four students registered for PhD at the Centre for International Business, Leeds University Business School. One of the topics was on outward investment by Chinese firms in global markets. This is an area largely untapped but is assuming increasing importance. The other three topics were knowledge transfer in Hungarian Telecom, foreign entry strategies in the Vietnamese telecom service industry and knowledge management in international alliances.

At Royal Holloway, University of London, I am currently supervising two PhD students (as a first supervisor), of whom one is working on value creation strategies in emerging markets with special reference to Turkey, and the other on the key success factors in establishing international strategic alliances in the Chinese market. I play major supervisor role in these two cases. I helped one of the two students obtained a three-year scholarship from a charity worth £18000 in total.

Research Interests

My research area is international business strategy. My current research encompasses the following areas: 本人的研究领域是国际企业战略。这主要包括:

i. Knowledge transfer within multinational corporations (MNCs) in emerging markets. Several publications have been produced in international journals based on the theoretical framework and data contained in my thesis, e.g., The art of knowledge transfer: Secondary and reverse transfer in Chinas telecommunications manufacturing industry (with P. Buckley and J. Clegg) published in Management International Review. We have published another paper entitled Knowledge accession and knowledge acquisition in strategic alliances: The impact of supplementary and complementary dimensions in British Journal of Management (in press, with P. J. Buckley, K. Glaister and E. Klijn).

ii. Strategies of foreign direct investment in emerging/transitional markets, 新兴市场/转型经济中的外资投资战略,comprising motivations for internationalisation, entry strategies, post-entry development, managing cultural differences, relationship with local industry and host government, etc. I have looked at specific industries, e.g., telecom industry (China, Viet Nam and Hungary) and automotive industry (China). I have a paper published in the Journal of World Business (with P. Buckley and J. Clegg). The title of the paper is: Cultural awareness in knowledge transfer to China The role of Guanxi and Mianzi. Another of my recently published articles is in Multinational Business Review. The title of the article is: Chinas inward foreign direct investment success: Southeast Asia in the shadow of the dragon (with P. Buckley, J. Clegg and A. Cross)

iii. Creating sustainable comparative advantage within MNCs. This comprises restructuring and reorganisation of internal strategic resources. Issues on this line of enquiry include organisational change and transformation, social knowledge, organisational routines and their contribution to firm competitiveness. Along with my co-authors, I refined the concept of social knowledge and examined its importance in improving firm competitiveness. Currently, we have a paper entitled The social component of collective knowledge: Lessons from West-to-East technology transfer under review with Human Relations. We also looked at the relationship between state and state-owned firms in transitional economies based on the concept of joint venture type problem. We published one paper entitled Organizational change in a Chinese state-owned enterprise: Sinotrans in the 1990s in Management International Review (with P. Buckley and J. Clegg).
