This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. Shenzhen is at the forefront of China's reform and opening up. Over the past 40 years, Shenzhen has undergone earth-shaking changes, and China's economy and society have achieved a great leap from lack of adequate food and clothing to moderate prosperity. The special economic zone represented by Shenzhen has laid an important foundation for China's smooth reform and opening up through the practice of leading the way.
In the new historical period, in the face of "great changes unseen in a century", General Secretary Xi Jinping once again stressed that "China's reform and opening up will not stop." He attached great importance to the exemplary role of Shenzhen in the reform and opening up, and in light of the new international and domestic situation, raised the ardent expectation of "making persistent efforts and making new achievements". In August 2019, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council issued The Opinions on Supporting Shenzhen in Building aSocialist Pilot Demonstration Zone with Chinese Characteristics, pointing out that "Socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, and we support Shenzhen in holding high the banner of reform and opening up in the new era and building a Socialist Pilot Demonstration Zone with Chinese Characteristics." On this basis, China will advance reform and opening up at a higher starting point, at a higher level and with a higher goal, and form a new pattern of comprehensively deepening reform and expanding opening up.
In the future, Shenzhen will continue to fulfill the requirements of high-quality development, fully implement the strategy of innovation-driven development, seize the important opportunities in building the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, strengthen its core engine function, move forward to build a socialist pilot demonstration zone with Chinese characteristics, and strive to create an example of a strong modern socialist city. Through a new round of reform and opening up, led by the Shenzhen demonstration zone, we will realize what President Xi Jinping has said: "In the next 40 years, China will have to look at itself with new eyes."
